IMS has technical expertise inhouse and through its equity partner, CSIRO, as well as local and overseas commercially based design companies.
IMS has established strong working relationships with many Australian technical universities and research centres.
The CSIRO is the main source of technical advice. It retains an equity holding in IMS and is keen to promote the development of the magnet industry in Australia.
IMS has spent considerable time building relationships with other research establishments, including the University of Sydney, the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of NSW, the University of Wollongong, the Institute of Technology, Adelaide, the University of Melbourne and a consortium called SEMCAM.
SEMCAM was originally formed by the CSIRO, the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney, with the task of assisting companies in developing electrical applications. It was recently expanded to include the University of Wollongong.
Permanent magnets offer great potential for significant advances in reducing the size of motors. They are currently used in applications ranging from Walkman head phones, microwave ovens and parts for computerised electronics.
